Bike Patrol Unit
The Chinook Centre Bike Patrol Unit was formed in April 1994 and was the first Security Bike Patrol Unit to be certified by the Law Enforcement Bicycle Association (LEBA). In 2005 they became the first Canadian Security Bike Patrol Unit to also be certified by the International Police Mountain Bike Association (IPMBA). The Unit employs members specifically dedicated to patrol the mall grounds and parking facilities. They are available to assist all our visitors.
The Chinook Centre Bike Patrol Unit is a crime prevention tool whose enhanced mobility allows for rapid response and intervention to any incident. Our officers are capable of patrolling areas inaccessible by vehicles and employ their speed and stealth to prevent criminal activity.
The Bike Patrol Officers are deployed in two basic methods:
- The first manner consists of the uniformed Officer that is responsible for general exterior patrol, customer service, and incident response
- The second method is the Officer scheduled to patrol to a specific area or zone and equipped with high visibility clothing and lights. This method is used to create a highly visible Patrol Officer during periods of increased vehicle and pedestrian traffic.
Asset Building
Inspired by the success of asset building initiatives by Police and Security in Richmond, British Columbia, in 2005 the Chinook Centre Security Team took on an it’s own asset building initiative based on the work of the Search Institute, an independent nonprofit organization whose mission is to provide leadership, knowledge, and resources to promote healthy children, youth and communities. The institute developed 40 Developmental Assets, which are the building blocks that can help youth grow up healthy, caring and responsible.
Making an effort to connect with youth and kids, Security Officers are taking opportunities to talk with young people. They are opening the doors of communication by recognizing when young people do well and act positively, by approaching them to commend them on their positive behaviour or actions, or even just to talk to them Security Officers present another side to their image and role. Although Security Officers are in a position of authority, they are also in a position to be great role models. By taking the opportunity to build assets Officers are becoming strong role models.
By increasing positive interactions with young people, befriending them, and rewarding them for good behaviour, Officers hope to encourage them to become responsible, caring adults. They also hope that reaching out to a youth in a positive way might prevent that youth from making a criminal or negative choice in life.
This amplified focus on youth development has allowed Security Officers to start positive interactions with youth using:
“Positive Ticketing” – Gateway to positive relationships
The Calgary Police “About Face” Program
Bicycle Rodeos
Above and Beyond - internal recognition
What customers are saying, “... I took Haley on a daddy and daughter hang out day to the mall down at Chinook... a couple of the officers came up while we were eating and started chatting to Haley and saying how they noticed she was behaving, etc, etc and then handed her some circus tickets… Not the tickets, but the way they spoke with Haley was what impressed me...very thoughtful and very kind.”
In March 2006, the Chinook Centre Security Department was recognized and awarded “The Organization Asset Building Award” through CiACY (Communities in Action with Children and Youth) for helping build a positive community with children and youth by strengthening: Other Adult Relationships; Community Values Youth; Youth as Resources; and Adult Role Models.
