PROJECT CONSTRUCTION

The Chinook Centre Expansion is a two storey addition to the northeast corner of the existing facility. There will be two levels of cast-in-place concrete underground parking and two levels of structural steel mall addition.  The underground parkade footprint is almost twice as large as the mall addition footprint. The new corridor tie-ins will require renovations to the existing mall to blend the old with the new.  Part of the renovation includes creating a clerestory for the existing common mall area at the interface locations.  All work will be completed within and around an operating facility that hosts thirteen million customers a year.

Construction started in April 2008 with underground site utility work; shoring and excavation followed shortly thereafter. The concrete substructure commenced in July 2008 with footings, columns and slab on grade. Final completion is scheduled for fall 2010. The Chinook Centre Expansion project will further enhance the retail experience for its customers and continue its trademark as being the best mall in Calgary and one of the busiest malls in Canada.

Work on the concrete structure continues into the 14th month of production. The main structural components of the parkade are now complete. Finishing elements, including stair cores, miscellaneous site-works located in the parkade comprising up-stand walls, formwork for elevated sidewalks, concrete aprons and curbs continue to be completed. Concrete placement to division three metal deck on second floor along with the penthouse slab also complete. Further schedule advancement opportunities related to the concrete structure are not achievable as this work is no longer on the critical path and it approaches completion.

Structural steel including open web steel joists for the expansion has been completed in division three with installation commencing in division four of a total of five divisions. On September 13, 2009, marked the successful installation of the new south clerestory located above the existing shop centre. All structural steel members including girder trusses and joists were completed on this day. Installation of a second structural steel portal frame in division three is also now complete.  Miscellaneous items related to the second and third divisions are being finalized. Metal deck installation is complete on the in division two and advancing in division three; roof installation continues to advance with base sheet installation nearing completion in division one, including clerestory roof and north tie-in roof. Delivery of metal deck for division four steel will commence in mid October.

Mechanical and electrical rough-in continues in the parkade to both P2 and P1 levels including piping, ductwork, mechanical equipment, and conduit installations. Mechanical work is now advancing in the expansion with installation of hangers, ductwork and rain water leaders in division one. Electrical work continues to advance within both at north tie-in and south tie-in points as well as the main electrical room vault.   Final connections of the passive venting equipment located at stair enclosures no.1 and no.9 are required, design finalization remains outstanding.

Building envelope exterior steel stud framing and sheathing for the expansion continues to advance onsite within division one including the clerestory.  Interior stud installation has also begun in division one, framing in around structural steel cross bracing and partition walls are underway.
Interior corridor renovations at the north end and south end tie-ins continue to advance with tenant demising walls including associated mechanical and electrical service work.
