The1990s

Thursday, June 3, 2010

After the bold and bright styles of the 80s, the 1990’s fashions shifted to a much more dressed down mood. The understated style with a cool, laidback aesthetic was all about comfort, sometimes even called “anti-fashion.”

Minimalism, sportswear and denim reigned and with the grunge movement, everything was about loose and casual. Baggy jeans, oversized flannel shirts and long tees were staples.

Utilitarian-inspired fashion such as overalls, with one strap undone of course, and carpenter jeans were in, and the lines between male and female fashion blurred as the androgynous look became popular.

When it came to femininity however, women opted for simple slip dresses and longer hemlines. Classic, tailored blazers in neutral hues replaced the power suit.

The latter part of the decade had more of a mod-inspired feel with baby-doll dresses and plaid minis (think: 1995’s Clueless). The loose-fitting styles seen throughout the first part of the decade shifted to include more form-fitting pieces.

As for accessories, who could forget earrings, necklaces and rings all adorned with the peace symbol?

The carpenter jean is back in all its utilitarian glory at The Gap. Simple T-shirts, oversized sweatshirts and minimalist lines are everywhere at Aritzia. At Banana Republic, the simple suit is a classic while long patio dresses are all the rage.
