The1970s

Wednesday, March 31, 2010

Spilling over from the previous decade (think: 1967’s Summer of Love and Woodstock in 1969), the hippie movement continued full force into the early 1970s. Hippie culture staked its claim on everything including music, film, TV and the arts.

Tie-dyed tops represented the psychedelic zest of the times, bell-bottoms and flared denim for both men and women stuck around, as did the mini skirt. But going long was also an option with the increased popularity of the ankle-length maxi dress. Evening looks were filled with jumpsuits and rompers, men layered with vests over bright tees and as disco was on the horizon, platform shoes were coming into vogue.

Today, after a long stint with the skinny jean, the flared denim is back. Jeans in electric blue hues for both men and women are being paired with button-up plaid tops for an effortlessly cool look. As summer draws near, there’s a desire for the comfort and ease when it comes to fashion. For women, whether you go short with a peasant-inspired mini dress, or long with the maxi, channel that summer of love. Denim is everywhere and both men and women can play with different washes and styles.  And no matter which 1970s-inspired fashions you choose, remember, it’s all about feeling groovy.
